Purpose of Study
Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
Who is the St Nicholas Mathematician?
The St Nicholas Mathematician has a deep and secure understanding of all the elements of mathematics through deliberate and structured subject area mapping. They are fluent inall areas of mathematics and are given time to embed and practise skills to ensure deeper understanding. Their recall of facts is accurate and quick. The St Nicholas Mathematician can reason mathematically and can confidently use a wide range of mathematical language. They can apply their broad range of skills and knowledge to a variety of problem-solving opportunities by working systematically and methodically. They make meaningful connections between mathematics and other subject areas and use these opportunities to develop fluency, reasoning and problem- solving capability.
St Nicholas Curriculum Rationale
• Purposeful, real-life and engaging learning opportunities encourage the development of all strands and elements of mathematics;
• Objectives across all strands revisited and embedded within and across year groups / key stages to ensure cumulative fluency of skills, knowledge and understanding;
• Through deliberate mapping of distinct domains, children are given the opportunity to understand each in depth and can then successfully apply this knowledge to other curriculum areas
